Many BCIT students begin their programs without well-developed learning strategies. As a result, they are often learning how to learn while also managing demanding course content, increasing both cognitive load and stress.
While most students can understand the material, many struggle with the pace and volume of information. Research suggests that a majority rely on passive study habits such as re-reading notes, memorizing, or last-minute cramming. Although these approaches can feel productive, they often lead to shallow learning and difficulty applying knowledge in assessments and real-world situations.
Effective learning requires structure. Planning, organizing, and actively engaging with course material helps reduce overwhelm, improve retention, and strengthen long-term understanding.
These three modules explore the importance of active, structured learning and introduce practical strategies to improve focus, organization, and study effectiveness.
